Perryville 20, Bigelow 6 (at UCA)

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette -- There was nothing about Perryville’s rushing attack that should have concerned Bigelow’s defense. That might have been the problem.

Perryville (1-0) gained 372 yards rushing on the way to a 20-6 victory Tuesday night at Central Arkansas’ Estes Stadium. Fullback Kane Drye finished with 125 yards on 10 carries, while tailback Tyler Blackmon added 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette --Deshaun Bagby’s 86-yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown turned out to be an anomaly.

The junior’s run helped set the tone for Mayflower’s 28-16 victory over Heber Springs on Tuesday night at Central Arkansas’ Estes Stadium, but that was about all fans got to see of Bagby’s and the Eagles’ breakaway ability.

Mayflower (1-0) arrived as a team built for speed, with Bagby having turned in one of the state’s top sophomore seasons a year ago. But the Eagles’ reputation for game-breaking plays apparently preceded them, because they looked like a thoroughly scouted football team on their first offensive possession.

Junction City 48, Smackover 0

SMACKOVER — Junction City gave Smackover Coach Joe Black a rude homecoming, blasting the Buckaroos behind sophomore Alan Turner, who ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception for another touchdown in the first half.

Black, 63, graduated from Smackover in 1962 and returned to coach his alma mater last spring.

The Dragons stormed to a 42-0 halftime lead, invoking the 35-point mercy rule and a continuously running clock in the second half.

Turner ran for touchdowns of 75 and 5 yards and also returned an interception for a score.

Senior Justin Cook and sophomore Kyle Darden also ran for touchdowns, while Dustin Franklin threw a touchdown pass to senior Anthony Carter.

Leroy Kimmons scored Hackett’s touchdown on a 7-yard run in the first quarter.

East Poinsett County 6, Marked Tree 16

MARKED TREE — Michael Gray got Marked Tree’s season off to a rousing start with a 63-yard touchdown run with 9:20 to go in the first quarter in a victory over East Poinsett County.

Clarendon’s Conner James caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Tavadrick Lee for a 14-0 lead with 6:01 left in the opening period. Steve Boston came up with an interception and Brooks was the beneficiary, scoring on a 9-yard run with 3:03 left in the quarter.

Lee’s 1-yard run gave Clarendon a 26-0 lead with 10:13 left in the second quarter. After Clarendon forced a safety for a 28-0 lead, Brooks scored his second touchdown on a 6-yard run with 4:46 left in the first half.
