Glen Rose 35, Shiloh Christian 34 OT
A leaping Michael Blancher caught a pass from Nathan Jones for the two-point conversion to give Glen Rose a 35-34 overtime victory over Shiloh Christian in the Class 3A championship game Saturday.
In the extra period, the Beavers (14-1) scored on Doug Vinson’s 2-yard run to make it a 34-33 game and set up the winning pass play. It was the third touchdown for Vinson, who rushed for 212 yards and was named most valuable player.
“There was never any doubt we were going to go for two,” said Glen Rose coach Billy Elmore. “The question was which play we would run. I must have changed my mind 1,500 times.”
Shiloh Christian (12-2) scored first in overtime on a 13-yard pass from Blake Roberts to Chris Bryant. The Saints, the defending state champions, opted to kick the extra point after the touchdown.
It was an even game most of the way. Tied 14-14 at halftime, Glen Rose’s Jones gave the Beavers the 20-14 lead with 2:26 left in the third with a 1-yard touchdown. The Saints scored on a 12-yard pass from Roberts to Jake Ryan with 6:50 left.
In the fourth quarter, Shiloh took the lead at 27-20 on an 18-yard run by Roberts, who ran for 128 yards and passed for 263 and three touchdowns.
Glen Rose tied the score on a 2-yard run by Vinson with 2:15 remaining.
