Looking for a good church. Any suggestions?
Posted July 10, 2006
While I'm in Texas taking theology courses, I may go on a field trip or two, so I'd welcome your suggestions. Lakewood Church, the nation's largest megachurch, is in Houston and I could go there on Sunday. (It's several hours away, but rental cars are cheap on weekends and you can drive 70-miles-per-hour in the Lone Star State.)
Or, I could visit Christ Church in Plano, one of the largest Episcopal Churches in the country -- for the time being, at least. Christ Church announced a few days ago that it plans to "disassociate" itself from the Episcopal Church. Exactly what that means is unclear.
I could make a pilgrimage to The Potter's House: T.D. Jake's Church near Dallas or stop by Cathedral of Hope -- a predominantly gay and lesbian megachurch in Dallas.
Please send me your votes:
1.) Lakewood
2.) Potters House
3.) Cathedral of Hope
4.) Christ Church
5.) Other (please specify.)
If any experts on Texas spirituality are reading this blog, please send me your suggestions or story ideas.
Also, for my non-Christian readers, let me know if there are any good mosques, temples or synagogues around here.

I'd at least explore Lakewood Church, not because I think it is anything more than a typical business person's church preaching the gospel of prosperity, but because the story of Joel Osteen's father, who founded the church, and Joel, who became its minister during its period of growth, who apparently dropped out of college under circumstances that may not be the best, and the total exclusion of any theological content from his very smooth sermons, make for an interesting story.
It might be interesting to see what they are really about, up close. Well, as close as you can get, anyway.

It would be a toss up between Christ Church and The Potter's House.
Christ Church for the beauty in both the service and the building itself.
But then, wow, TD Jakes...what a great speaker.
I'd have trouble deciding between those two.
