Southeast Christian Church in Louisville is more influential than Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va. -- the megachurch founded by Rev. Jerry Falwell, according to a leading Christian publication.
The Church Report asked 2,000 spiritual leaders across the United States to list the most influential churches in America. Southeast Christian, whose pastor until last month was Bob Russell, finished sixth. Thomas Road ranked #27.
Southeast Christian is Kentucky's largest congregation with average weekend attendance of about 18,500 people. It is part of the independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ.
Southeast finished one spot ahead of T.D. Jake's The Potter's House (near Dallas) and one place behind Lakewood Church (in Houston) -- reportedly the biggest congregation in America. Willow Creek (near Chicago), pastored by Bill Hybels ranked #1 followed by Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in southern California.
The complete list is available in The Church Report's July issue or can be read via the internet.
