Bible Belt Blogger: MegaSunday with Joel Osteen

Dsc00656_1

Like preachers across America, Joel Osteen greets worshippers as they leave on Sundays. But it's not a quick or easy process for the Houston televangelist, leader of America's largest megachurch.

People line up by the hundreds to shake his hand, to snap a picture, to ask him for a prayer or an autograph. He good-naturedly obliges, smiling the entire time. Today at Lakewood Church it took an hour for Osteen to greet each person. By the time it was over, he had held a baby, hugged a sick child and received a greeting card from a stranger.

The Ramirez family of San Antonio were among the throngs and waited more than 45 minutes to meet the preacher. "I've been looking forward to it all week long," said 9-year-old Laura. Her brother, 11-year-old Michael, proudly showed off his freshly autographed Bible. "It's just very exciting for me," he said. "He preaches the Gospel so well and I think he's a great role model."

A Texas journalist friend had told me to forget about trying to get an interview with the preacher — he's just too busy. But Osteen shook my hand and answered my questions. Log on to Bible Belt Blogger tomorrow to read what the preacher had to say.
