Baptist movie still making money

Bible Belt Blogger: Baptist movie still making money

Facing the Giants, a movie about faith and high school football, is still making money -- seven weeks after its release. A Baptist church in Albany, Georgia spent $100,000 to make the movie. So far, it has grossed $8.3 million at the box office.

Many of the critics mocked Facing the Giants and the movie never even cracked the Top Ten. But week after week it continues to draw a die-hard following. This weekend, playing on just 363 screens, it collected an estimated $704,000 -- an impressive $1,939 per screen.

Typically, movies make most of their money in the first two weeks and then watch their earnings plummet. Not Giants. It's box office take has been fairly steady the past five weeks. This weekend, its estimated week-t0-week earnings actually climbed slightly.

How much longer will this movie draw crowds? It's hard to say. But by selling more than one million tickets, Facing the Giants has certainly surprised Hollywood.
