ABC's "God Gives Hope" ad cancelation isn't news in New York
Posted November 18, 2006
A multi-billion-dollar media giant which has been boycotted by evangelical Christians cancels an ad in Times Square -- a two-minute walk from the New York Times' front door -- because the ad mentions God.
And nobody's writing about it.
I haven't seen anything in the Times or the Daily News, the Post or Newsday. The Sun, the Wall Street Journal -- all of them have apparently taken a pass. (If they have published something, please forward me a copy...)
The media wrote tons of stories about the Methodists being banned from Reuters' billboard three years ago. This time, the company blocking the ads is far more famous -- Disney-owned ABC. But the standoff has flown under the radar for days.
Any idea why the Manhattan media seems to be missing the story this time?
Update: The story hasn't broken in the boroughs yet, but they're on top of it in the 'burbs. Gary Stern, the outstanding religion writer for The Journal News had an interesting take on the story Friday. If you haven't seen his new blog yet, 'On Religion', you should. www.lohud.com/blogs
Update: McClatchy Tribune News Service picked up the "God Gives Hope" story last night and it's now posted on the website of the Seattle Times, Honolulu Advertiser, Kansas City Star and a bunch of other papers -- none of them (as far as I can tell) in the Big Apple. Lexington and Fort Worth printed the story today. Linda Leicht, religion reporter for The Springfield (Mo.) Times-Leader also has written an interesting story about the ad campaign. Ted Olsen at Christianity Today has also opined.

Makes you wonder what the mood is, on God, on the streets in New York.
