Kentucky hosts 2009 Southern Baptist Convention

The nation's largest Protestant denomination has tentatively selected Louisville to host its massive annual convention in 2009. As a result, thousands of Southern Baptists will flock to Kentucky's largest city, electing a new president and helping to chart the denomination's future course.
It'll be the first Southern Baptist Convention in the Bluegrass State since 1959 and the tenth since 1857. Most -- but not all -- were in Louisville. The Baptists convened in Lexington in 1880 and in tiny Russellville in 1866.
If you live in the Bible Belt, chances are your state has hosted the SBC at least once over the years. Hot Springs, Arkansas (for example) -- boyhood home of President Bill Clinton -- hosted the convention at least three times in the early twentieth century.
