Bible Belt Blogger: Baptist preacher raises $15,000 for Israel

UPDATE -- Controversial Clays Mill Road Baptist Church pastor Jeff Fugate asked his church to give $15,000 to help Jewish refugees displaced by the fighting in northern Israel. They didn't disappoint him. The money was donated in one week's time.

"Our church sent $15K and then one of the churches we have helped to start sent $3,300 - so the total ended up being $18,300. Praise the Lord! The people responded quickly and strongly!" Pastor Fugate writes in an e-mail.

Next on Pastor Fugate's agenda: a preaching engagement in the Gulf Coast region ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Good for him.

As I said in an earlier post, no doubt I disagree with most of what Fugate says, but my hat's off to him for getting out there and helping people while so many others (myself included) have done little or nothing.

Why do you put the word "Controversial" in front of Pastor Jeff Fugate's name? Perhaps we should start saying "The controversial Herald Leader who put a lawyer add in their newspaper concerning the victims of flight 5191 makes no apologies for their practices. You see, I'm getting the hang of it.

Editor's note: If Pastor Fugate believes the adjective "controversial" is either untrue or unfair, I'll certainly consider changing it. Based on my past conversations with him, it's my impression that he believes that the label is accurate.
