Bible Belt Blogger: Mike Wallace gives Katie Couric high marks

Mike Wallace, the legendary CBS newsman, says he's disturbed by cable television news' increasing focus on sex, violence, celebrities and infotainment. But speaking to journalists at the University of Michigan this evening, he gave high marks to Katie Couric, CBS's new network news anchor.

"I have been watching her lately and her broadcast has turned into something that is a lot more serious than a lot of us expected it to be," Wallace said.

The longtime 60 Minutes star is the second TV news heavyweight to weigh in on Couric this week. Former CBS Evening News anchor Walter Cronkite praised her in a Baltimore Sun article, saying "I think she is doing a great job."

On Sep. 5, Couric became the first woman to serve as solo anchor of a network evening news cast.

Critics gave Couric mixed reviews her first day, but Wallace says the program is very good and getting better.

Couric, who left NBC's top-rated Today Show so she could tackle America's third-rated network news program, understands there is still an audience out there that wants "good, well-covered news," he said, adding "It's a damn good broadcast."

Wallace was speaking at a forum on the future of journalism sponsored by an organization which bears his name -- the University of Michigan's Knight-Wallace fellowship program.
