Christian activists target Romney

Bible Belt Blogger: Christian activists target Romney

Mitt Romney was a pro-gay, pro-choice, pro-gun control mainstream Massachusetts politician. Then he saw a blinding light on the road to (take your pick) -- Damascus. Or Des Moines.

Anyhow, Romney's now a born-again social conservative and he's saying all the things the Christian right loves to hear. US News & World Report suggests Romney's making inroads. Pat Robertson recently invited Romney to speak at Regent University. Pro-Romney forces worked the crowds at the annual meeting of the National Association of Religious Broadcasters earlier this month. Prominent Romneyites include Jay Sekulow -- one of the most prominent Christian conservative legal activists in the country.

But not everybody's buying it. Christian conservative activists like Gary Glenn of the American Family Association Michigan say Romney is an evolutionist and a contortionist and a con-man.

The anti-Romney rhetoric (from liberals and conservatives alike) is biting. Take this line from HuffingtonPost.com

"No one recovers from flip-flops this large, this brazen and this over the top. It's like (Romney's) arguing that he is a black Jew. Dude, you just said you were a white Mormon and I can see with my own two eyes that you aren't black. But he still looks at you with a straight face and tells you, 'No, I believe in my heart now that I am black and Jewish.' "

Thus far, no single candidate is rallying Christian conservatives. It will be interesting to see if Romney is able to make inroads.

Stick a Fork In Him -- Mitt Romney is Done

by Cenk Uygur

No one is buying what Mitt Romney is selling. Voters love strength and hate wishy-washy politicians, especially Republican voters. And no one does wishy-washy, flippy-floppy like Mitt Romney.

I knew he was done as soon as I saw this video (of Romney's 1994 debate with Sen. Ted Kennedy). We ran the video on our show in January and I pounded the gavel right afterward and said it then -- he is done.

No one recovers from flip-flops this large, this brazen and this over the top. It's like he's arguing that he is a black Jew. Dude, you just said you were a white Mormon and I can see with my own two eyes that you aren't black. But he still looks at you with a straight face and tells you, "No, I believe in my heart now that I am black and Jewish." Okay, whatever. Who's next?

And now my suspicions have been confirmed. In the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll he got a whopping 4% of the Republican voters. Where's that fork?

No one, outside of the media and some rich donors, knew who this guy was anyway. And then their first impression was of a super-slick guy with better than good hair who was slipperier than a wet fish in a jello wrestling contest. Throw in the random Mormon bias this country has (as if your religion is any less absurd), and you had the icing on the he-never-had-a-chance cake.

He could have recovered from the Mormon thing. He couldn't recover from being the slickest guy on the planet. Every time I saw him speak there was one thing that kept running through my head, "I don't believe a word you're saying. I don't believe a word you're saying. I don't believe ..."

Anyway, he's got a couple of weeks, maybe a couple of months max left in him. But Mr. 4% ain't going anywhere but back home. It was nice knowing you Mitt. Well, not really, but you get the point.

Interesting and Hufington said a mouthful. I don't think Romey will rally the Christian right. Someone will but it won't be him.

That Cenk Uygur thing is an awesome piece of writing.

It's like he's arguing that he is a black Jew. Dude, you just said you were a white Mormon and I can see with my own two eyes that you aren't black. But he still looks at you with a straight face and tells you, "No, I believe in my heart now that I am black and Jewish."

Great stuff.
