Athens, Georgia April 21, 2008 –
Next month, University of Georgia student David Hill will travel the eastern United States playing sidewalk concerts to raise awareness for depression and suicide. From May 12 to May 18, 2008, Hill will play concerts in twenty-one cities in the eastern U.S. including Chicago, Nashville, New York City, and Atlanta.
Hill planned the road trip to fulfill a lifelong dream touring the country while playing music. Via the trip Hill also wants to share his message with others that dreams can come true. Hill is donating $.05 for every mile of the 3,779-mile road trip to Nuçi's Space in Athens, Georgia. Nuçi's Space is a non-profit organization that caters to the mental health and well being of Athens-area musicians. He hopes others will make a similar donation through the tour website.
The road trip was initially meant to fulfill one of Hill's lifelong dreams. Hill decided the trip could do others good, as well. According to Hill, "Everyone has dreams they haven't attained, and they want the power to make those dreams come true." Hill said he's playing on sidewalks out of necessity, but in a strange way he's still realizing his dream. "We're even making tour t-shirts to wear," he commented.
Hill had multiple friends that committed suicide at an early age. According to Hill, the trip is important for another reason. "There are people who can't recognize their dreams because they are no longer with us; this trip is in their memory as well. I wish I had known about Nuçi's Space earlier in my life."
Hill called the tour The Imagine Something 2008 Sidewalk Tour after reading Nuçi's Space literature. Hill explained, "Linda Phillips [Nuçi's Space founder] really believes in the power of people imagining something and going for it. I thought that title really summed up the tour." The tour's website includes a tour map, donation links, and a tour blog.
Hill is soliciting donations for his tour as well as for Nuçi's Space. With a donation of $.01 per mile ($37.79), the giver will receive a DVD of a few of David's street side performances from his road trip. A donation of $.05 per mile ($188.95) provides the donor with a free tour T-shirt and a DVD, and with a $.10 per mile donation ($377. 90) the contributor will receive a T-Shirt, a DVD and an original recorded song by David Hill written in memory of the person of your choice.
