— Arkansas will announce Creighton’s Dana Altman as the new basketball coach this afternoon, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has learned.

A press conference has been scheduled for 5 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena, according the the Arkansas Sports Information service. The new head coach will be at the ceremony, the announcment said.

A source with knowledge of the hiring situation said the deal to hire Altman was struck late Sunday night.

A University of Arkansas plane flew to Atlanta this morning. It was scheduled to go to Omaha, Neb., and then return to Fayetteville.

Altman is in Atlanta. Creighton is in Omaha.

Altman, 48, has has 260-141 record in 13 years at Creighton, a Missouri Valley Conference school. He’s 343-208 in 18 seasons as a Division I coach with eight NCAA Tournament trips.

Altman is 2-7 in the NCAA Tournament at a private school that is somewhat limited in recruiting because of its academic standards.

Creighton officials have declined comment.

Altman replaces Stan Heath, who was fired March 26.
