Polly and Dan Foote are among the many Arkansas landowners who have the potential to receive annual payments for storing carbon in their forests and soils.

They hope to be among the first in the state to sell carbon offsets to industries that emit significant amounts of the greenhouse gases that many scientists blame for global warming.

The Footes and many others like them hope to generate income — in return for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, or preventing greenhouse gases from being emitted — by selling carbon credits on the Chicago Climate Exchange.
