Rheem Manufacturing Co. said Friday it will lay off about 10 percent of its Fort Smith work force on Nov. 26.

The action will affect 125 gas-furnace workers, according to a news release from the air-conditioning and heating unit manufacturer. Rheem employs about 1,200 people.

“The continued downturn in the nation’s housing industry coupled with unseasonably warm weather has resulted in an untenable inventory buildup of gas furnace supplies,’’ spokesman Ed Raniszeski said in a statement released late Thursday.
