— For the first time in six years, Sept. 11 fell on a Tuesday this year, the same day of the week that the planes flew into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and shook the United States to its core.

In an increasingly familiar annual ceremony in Lower Manhattan, public officials, visitors and families of those killed on 9/11 gathered to mourn and remember.

Unlike the sunny day of the attacks, this year’s skies were moody and dark, alternately threatening and delivering rain. The ceremony took place not at ground zero, where construction cranes now work, but near its southeastern corner, in Zuccotti Park.
