An 18-year-old woman was shot dead in a car-jacking early Friday outside a fitness center in Jacksonville, authorities said.
Police officers arrived at Ultimate Fitness on 1108 South Redmond Road around 2 a.m. and met with a witness who told them that a masked black man with a silver and black handgun had approached the woman and demanded keys, a phone and valuables.
The witness told officers that the items were handed over and then the man began shooting, striking the woman several times, fatally.
The victim was later identified as Danick Adams of Jacksonville.
According to Jacksonville police, the witness was able to flee and call authorities.
Mere minutes after the first call to police, an officer spotted the vehicle said to match the one taken from the scene. As that officer tried to stop the driver, he jumped out of the car and ran off. A woman who also was in the car is being held for questioning.
The fitness center is near Dupree Park in Jacksonville.
