Not now, Mommy’s blogging

Last week wasn’t a good one for bloggers, specifically not keepers of the so-called mom blogs, as Kyle Brazzel reports in Wednesday’s Family section. Personal Web sites maintained by mothers whose online self-expression runs the gamut from posts of their children engaged in cute play with captions composed in the first-person voice of the child and snarky just-us-girls asides on the underbelly of child-rearing and housekeeping to ruminative dispatches on love, guilt and spanking.

In terms of catch phrases involving the word “mom,” American society in the past decade has seen soccer moms give way to security moms, with mom-bloggers now an amalgam of both — mothers who drive carpool but who also mobilize and engage politically and intellectually.

Kristen Chase is the irreverent, incredulous voice behind Motherhood Uncensored, a popular mom-blog whose epicenter is temporarily Little Rock Air Force Base, as Chase and her two young children wait out a military reactivation of her husband, a pilot.

“It’s just like anything else — like chick lit,” says Chase, who has courted controversy by posting about child leashes and circumcision but won followers by blogging honestly about screaming at her infant son in the middle of the night when he was wailing and seemingly incapable of sleep.
