Ashland Inc. to buy chemical producer in deal for cash, stock

Ashland Inc., the biggest U.S. chemical distributor, agreed to buy Hercules Inc. for $2.6 billion in cash and stock to double earnings and gain chemicals used in paper-making, water treatment and construction.
