OFF THE WALL: Warhol in the fall figures in Arts Center’s calendar

LITTLE ROCK — The figure of the late Andy Warhol still looms over contemporary art and culture, and the Arkansas Arts Center has announced its 2008-09 exhibition schedule, where the celebrated painter of soup cans has a prominent place.
“Recent Acquisitions,” Aug.
15-Sept. 28 - The drawings, photography, prints and paintings that have been added to the Arts Center Foundation’s collection since 2005.
“Visions: Selections from the James T. Dyke Collection of Contemporary Drawings,” Sept. 12-Nov. 9 - A whopping 118 pieces from the collection of Little Rock’s James T. Dyke.
The display will be curated by former Arts Center Director Townsend Wolfe.
“51st Annual Delta Exhibition,” Oct. 3-Nov. 16 - Eleana Del Rio, owner and director of Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Los Angeles, is the juror for the popular show featuring contemporary art from artists in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
“Andy Warhol: 15 Weeks of Fame,” Oct. 17- Feb. 1 - Bad title aside, this exhibit promises to be a wealth of Warhol with paintings, drawings, photographs and other objects settling down at the Arts Center for more than three months.
Yes, there will be Campbell’s Soup can paintings as well as famous screen prints of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy and Liz Taylor. This display, which will have a yet-to-be determined admission charge, is organized by the Arts Center in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
“Tim Hursley: Warhol after the Silver Factory,” Nov.
28-Feb. 1 - The University of Arkansas at Little Rock contributes its collection of photos that focus on the architecture of Warhol’s Factory at the Con-Edison Building after moving there from the Silver Factory studio in Midtown Manhattan.
“40th Collectors Show & Sale,” Dec. 5-Jan. 4 - Works on paper, available for purchase, from more than 20 New York galleries.
“Edge of the Sublime: Enamels by Jamie Bennett,” Dec. 19-Feb. 22 - A midcareer retrospective of work by Bennett that includes jewelry, paintings, enameled wall reliefs, drawings, sketches and notebooks.
“What Comes After Nothing: Post Minimalist Drawings,” Jan. 16-March 1 - Great title for an exhibition of contemporarywork that comes from the Arts Center’s well-stocked collection.
“36th Annual Toys Designed by Artists,” March 13-May 10 - The Arts Center’s popular toys exhibit finds itself divorced from Christmas again.
“Warren MacKenzie: Legacy of an American Potter,” March 20-May 17 - Work selected from a 57-year period.
“48th Annual Young ArkansasCampbell’s Soup II: Scotch Broth by Andy Warhol.
Artists Exhibition,” April 3-May 24 - A juried exhibition with art by Arkansas students from kindergarten through 12th grade that never fails to amaze.
“Ben Whitehouse: Observation,” June 5-Aug. 2, 2009 - Whitehouse is a photorealistic painter and videographer whose conceptual ideas are derived from nature.
Work by Jun Kaneko, June 5-Aug. 2, 2009 - An extensive sampling of work by the renowned ceramist including largescale sculpture, drawings and paintings.
