School promotes student achievement in positive learning environment

LITTLE ROCK — A priority for Atkins High School is promoting student achievement through quality educational experiences in a positive learning environment. With an enrollment of 353 students, Atkins High School offers a variety of curricular options facilitated by a highly qualified staff.
Academically, comprehensive services support all students. The Advanced Placement program has been continually expanded for students in gradesnine and 10 with pre-AP classes offered in English, U.S. history and calculus. Future additions include pre-AP and AP biology, which will complement the existing courses of AP English literature and composition, AP physics B, AP U.S. history, and AP calculus AB. All instructors in the Pre-AP and AP programs are certified by the College Board and have received College Board course approval. Advanced Placement Incentive Grants have added supplemental materials to the AP classes, withthe most recent being received for the AP calculus course. One hundred percent of the students enrolled in the courses participate in the Advanced Placement exams, which offer college credit for qualifying scores.
The advanced courses provide one option for students in the Atkins Gifted Program, along with diverse competitions in subject areas and extracurricular opportunities, such as the University of Arkansas Gifted and Talented Scholars Program,Governor’s School and other summer learning and leadership experiences. A high percentage of students in the program receive scholarships for future educational experiences. The district’s Gifted and Talented program is a former and recent recipient of the Act 56 Outstanding Program Award, as selected by the Governor’s Advisory Council for the Education of Gifted and Talented Children.
