LITTLE ROCK — Chartered 26 years ago, Southside High School’s Key Club has been the key source of many students’ success. As part of the K-Family, Key Club teaches high school students the importance of helping others.
Key Club can be best described as a service organization. Students involved are required to put forth several volunteer hours of service. This year’s Key Club, headed by Stacey Lessley, has done an outstanding job on both a school and international level.
The Southside Key Club is a partof the Missouri-Arkansas District, or MoArk District. Each division is assigned a lieutenant governor in order to relay district information to the individual clubs.
The Division 15 lieutenant governor for the 2007-2008 term was Southside senior Danielle Hurst, who prior to her year as lieutenant governor received the Most Distinguished Club President Award.
Southside Key Club is well known for serving the district and community in a variety of ways. This year alone Southside contributed to Make-A-Wish, UNICEF, March of Dimes, Read to Lead, Children’s Miracle Network and High 5 for Health. Perhaps the most rewarding service portrayed by Southside students is local community work. In addition to district projects the club volunteers in local area projects. Some of the most popular projects include working in the concession stands at home football games, stand cleanup, highway cleanup, Christmas Brings Hope and Habitat for Humanity. The members also donate their time to help the local sponsoring Kiwanis Club. The frequently worked projects are Chubby Menard Pancake Day and the barbecue dinner.
Working with Kiwanis is one of the greatest opportunities provided to the young Key Club members. For the extraordinary help from the Batesville and White River Kiwanis clubs, Southside owes a big “thanks.” Without the support from both organizations, the Southside Key Club would be unable to perform all their incredible projects.
