— The Flying Wallendas are known for giving birth to several generations of circus performers and high-wire walkers. The family business for the Deerings is art, which is a high-wire act all on its own - but at least it doesn’t require a safety net and tights.

Cantrell Gallery is hosting an art show displaying sculpture, paintings and drawings by the Deering clan in an exhibit titled “A Family Gift.” The family of artists is headed up by John Deering, the chief editorial cartoonist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

He’s also a nationally syndicated cartoonist (Zack Hill, Strange Brew), sculptor, painter and large-animal veterinarian. OK, we made the last one up, but the guy is so busy that it could be true. We can never find him around the office to check it out.

For the Cantrell Gallery show, John is joined by his wife, Kathy, a parttime respiratory therapist at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. Kathy will be exhibiting her sculptures, which reflect her faith and her interest in nature. Daughter Liz Deering Morris, art teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, will have her name on several bright paintings. Sons Matt and Will, students at Little Rock Central High School, show off their early work.

“A Family Gift” continues through June 21, Cantrell Gallery, 8206 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, (501) 224-1335. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Admission is free.

If that stimulus check is still burning a hole in your wallet, you could put it toward the purchase of original art and help out the Arkansas Repertory Theatre at the same time.

ArtWorks XXI, the Rep’s annual art auction, is 6:30-10 p.m. Saturday at the Rep, 601 Main Street, Little Rock.

More than 100 pieces of art donated by Arkansas artists will go under the gavel. There will be jazz, hors d’oeuvres and an open bar to keep the atmosphere spirited. Admission is $40. Call (501) 378-0405.

The name and work of painter Sheila Parsons rarely drops out of sight for very long. When she is not holding workshops, her work is on display somewhere. Through the end of the month Parsons will have 65 watercolors and acrylics on display at the Framework Gallery, 1061 Front St. in Conway, (501) 336-9330. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
