What’s new at Glen Rose High School?

LITTLE ROCK — Students at Glen Rose High School have found several new things this school year. Among them are: NEW FACULTY:
◊Shelly Daily comes to Glen Rose from the Sheridan Public Schools. She has been a teacher for nine years. Mrs. Daily will be teaching biology and environmental science for 10th, 11th and 12th grades this year.
◊Nohora Carson is a native of Columbia. Mrs. Carson comes to Glen Rose after last teaching in Arkadelphia. Mrs. Carson has lived in the United States for 12 years and has been a teacher for six years. She is teaching Spanish I and II this year and is the Spanish Club adviser.
◊Kathryn Turner is teaching in our resource department. She has been in the education field for 27 years and comes from Bismarck where she taught last year.
◊ Gary Shoptaw is the boy’s basketball coach. Coach Shoptaw was retired for the past three years. He most recently coached at Poyen and Pulaski Academy.
◊Cindy Williams has been a counselor for 23 years. Mrs. Williams was the ninth- and 10thgrade counselor at Malvern High School. Mrs. Williams looks forward to working with seniors in their preparation for college.
◊Darrell Ellis has moved to the high school from the Glen Rose Middle School to help in the central office as an assistant administrator. In addition, he still coaches the Beavers’ football team and continues with an eighth-grade science class.
◊Dee Stanley, a former Glen Rose graduate, has joined the staff as an aide in the special education department.
NEW PROGRAMS:
◊JEdI (Juvenile Education Initiative) is a Web-based computerprogram that offers enrichment and remediation in core areas for the high school students. JEdI is being used by the English, math and special education departments to hone in on weaknesses to enhance the students’ present skills.
◊Edline is also a Web-based program that provides parents with immediate access to student grades and assignments. Each parent may access his student’s records for each class to assist the child in keeping on task in classes.
◊School Reach, a new communication tool, is used to notify parents of upcoming events, important dates, school closings, emergencies and other important information necessary for parents.
◊AP Calculus and French II are offered for the first time this year through distance learning classes. Glen Rose High School offers five AP courses, pre-AP classes in the core areas and two years of Spanish and French.
◊ The Counselor’s Corner is found on the school Web site www.glenrose.k12.ar.us. Mrs. Williams continues to upgrade this feature, which provides scholarship information, college admission requirements, financial aid updates, ACT test dates, a link to Preparing for Tests and career planning information.
NEW TECHNOLOGY:
Pla sma Cam DNC Cutter is used in Agricultural Science this year. This laser equipment allows students to design and complete metal-working projects. Additional computers were added to the high school computer lab and the resource room to allow more students to access JeDI and other computer programs. The school continues to upgrade with Smart Boards, document cameras, and other projection equipment.
