— Betty Barker Smith, longtime publisher of The Baxter Bulletin, has announced she will retire from the newspaper at the end of September.

Smith started her newspaper career in 1980 as an advertising sales representative at the Anderson Independent Mail in Anderson, S.C. In 1989, she was named classified advertising manager at the Greenville News in South Carolina. Four years later, she was chosen to lead The Baxter Bulletin.

She accepted an appointment to become publisher of the Wausau Daily Herald at Wausau, Wis., in 1997, but later returned to The Bulletin. The Baxter Bulletin is owned by Gannett Co.
