Alcoa cuts workers, reduces spending, scales back output

PITTSBURGH — Aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. said Tuesday that it is cutting about 13 percent of its global work force, eliminating an estimated 13,500 jobs, and shearing spending and output in response to the economic downturn.
