2008 SPRING PRACTICE: UA defensive line has new approach
By Rob Keys (Contact)
Some of Arkansas’ biggest players are taking small steps this spring.
The Razorbacks’ defensive line, arguably the strength of a defense that is being retooled, not only is working with a new position coach for the first time since 2003 following Tracy Rocker’s departure to Ole Miss, but also is absorbing a new philosophy and style of play under first-year coordinator Willy Robinson.
“It doesn’t matter what anyone’s done in the past,” junior defensive end Adrian Davis said. “It’s all about now and the future. Everybody is like a freshman now. ... Everything around here is new.”
The newness starts with what assistant coach Bobby Allen called a “gap-oriented” approach to Arkansas’ line play. Translation: Arkansas’ linemen now will be responsible more gaps along the line of scrimmage than the individual blockers across from them.
