Fall 2008 basketball transfer Daniel Payne is no longer eligible to participate at the University of Arkansas and will be given his immediate release, UA said Saturday.

Payne, 6-7, 210, of Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, signed with the Hogs back in November and would have been a junior in the 2009 season. He was selected by The Sporting News as the junior college preseason player of the year.

At the time of his signing, Payne said that he liked the Arkansas coaching staff and that Coach John Pelphrey reminded him of Coffeyville Coach Jay Herkelman.

Payne averaged 22 points and 7 rebounds while connecting on 44 percent of his three-point shots in four games last season. He played high school basketball in South Bend, Ind.

A release from the university's sports information said the school would have no further comment on the matter.
