ROGERS — He got through a full 18 holes Wednesday as part of the pro-am tournament, but Arkansas football Coach Bobby Petrino prefers to keep his golf rounds shorter.

“I felt awful out there,” said Petrino, who admitted he was suffering some golf burnout after playing Tuesday in Razorbacks basketball Coach John Pelphrey’s charity tournament. “I like to get out there and play nine holes at night and sometimes five, six, whatever you can get in. My youngest daughter is a golfer, so it’s easy to get on the course with her,”

“That’s why I like nine holes, 12 holes. Once you get past 12, your mind wanders and goes somewhere else. You start thinking about first-and-10 and third-and-short.”

Petrino joined Pelphrey on Wednesday in his foursome of amateurs that played with former Lady Razorback Stacy Lewis.

The other two spots were filled by Christopher Green of Springdale and Michael Bahn of Bentonville, who donated an auction bid of $5,100 plus an extra $300, with the donations benefiting Pelphrey’s charitable organization Pel’s Pals.

“We’re really appreciative of Stacy and Coach Petrino for giving us the time,” said Pelphrey, whose team shot 12 under par in a scramble format. “Your time’s the most expensive thing you’ve got, and for Mike and Chris financially supporting us is just great. ... It’s been moving,”

Pelphrey said he enjoys playing golf since he doesn’t play basketball anymore.

“It’s a little bit different game,” he said. “In basketball, if you’re shooting a free throw everyone’s going to scream at you. In golf, everybody’s got to be quiet.”

Before the round, Lewis was asked if she was looking forward to playing with two of the most high-profile members of Arkansas’ athletic department.

“I’ve seen Coach Pelphrey hit balls. I mean, he looks like a good player,” she said. “I’ve heard good things about Coach Petrino.”

“Pelphrey can smash it a mile, and Stacy lined us up for every shot,” Petrino said. “We know who the pro is out there. No question about that.”
