FAYETTEVILLE — Sonny Weems wasn’t a Chicago Bull for long.

Shortly after the Bulls picked Weems, a former Arkansas forward, in the second round of Thursday night’s NBA Draft, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets for a second-round pick in 2009.

“We feel very fortunate to get him where we did,” Denver's vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman told the Denver Post.

Weems, who was picked 39th overall, was part of a three-way deal.

Denver got Weems from Chicago, and the Bulls got Omer Asik, drafted by Portland at No. 36. Then Portland received second-round picks from Denver in 2009 and New York in 2009 (owned by Chicago), plus Chicago's second-rounder in 2010.

Weems, from West Memphis, averaged a team-high 15 points for the Razorbacks last season and earned All-SEC honors. At 6-6, he likely can play shooting guard or small forward for the Nuggets.

“He can fit in the NBA as an energy guy,” Denver vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien told the Post.

Weems won a college slam dunk competition at the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four after completing his eligibility with the Razorbacks.

“I think he and J.R. Smith might have a nice dunk contest or two,” Chapman said. “He's a world-class athlete.”
